Almost a year has passed since
Grupo Fantasma left its trail in Columbia. But this “freight
train of a Latin band” — as The Village
Voice calls it — will return to The Music Café on
April 22.
With its independent nature still intact, Grupo Fantasma
is touring the country with its latest release, “Movimiento
Popular,” which means popular movement in Spanish.
The band fuses different genres that go from reggae to
norteño to rock in an attempt to illustrate the
culture of the Mexico-U.S. border. According to guitarist
Adrián Quesada, this culture is its “own
little country.”
Last year, the 10-member band shook the small stage of
The Music Café. With horns, drums, guitars and
an original and contagious rhythm, Grupo Fantasma conquered
the 450-person audience in its first concert in Columbia.
“By far, the best show I’ve ever seen in this room,” said
Johnny Finn, The Music Café manager. “(Their
music) touches on a lot of genres.” This eclectic
nature attracts a diverse audience, Finn said.
On April 22, get ready to welcome the summer with this
wave of cumbia, rock and reggae.
