Seeking the courage
to carry on Translation by Jessie Turner
Javier Solano
Today
we have awakened to a new country, a country with a new
conscience, risen from the mass of scrap metal of a train.
Today we have awakened with a wounded heart, a disturbed
memory, an uneasy spirit. We have seen ourselves, and
in the silence we have found answers to inevitable questions.
From the scraps of those trains, the blood that was spilled,
and the lives that were taken, remains the torn but silent
cry of the people, the Spanish people, that wakes up,
astonished in the face of a disproportionate evil.
Yesterday we arose to be witnesses to a radical change
in the reality that surrounds us.
Today we look for new meaning to that reality, in this
new country in which life goes on, miraculously continuing
in spite of those few who are dedicated to the contrary.
Today I look for a new courage in confronting my life,
to step onto a train and find answers to the emotional
awakening in which we are now submerged.
