Mother Earth meets Mid-Missourians

Adelante stasf writer

Earth Day in Columbia is celebrated April 27 this year, and the Latino community will be out in full force.
Columbia Verde, Adelante and Centro Latino will join Columbia’s two bilingual radio programs, La Hora Latina and Radio Ondas to host a “barrio Latino” on Eighth Street near the Columbia Missourian.
Columbia Verde founder Nadia Navarrete will pass out native plants for community members to take home. She will also distribute information about MU’s Hispanic and Latin American Faculty and Staff Association (HLAFSA), of which Columbia Verde is a part.
Around the corner on Elm Street, José García will grind wheat with kids of all ages and hand out information about the Food Systems and Sustainable Agriculture program at MU. Nearby, Jeanette García will represent the Heart Council of Missouri Girl Scouts and promote the growth of Latina girls through Girl Scouts and their “Uniquely ME” program. The Girl Scouts have troops in Columbia, Sedalia, Jefferson City and other communities. This celebration of Mother Earth will begin at noon in Peace Park, at Eighth and Elm streets, and last until 7:00 p.m. Besides the street fair, there’s a full lineup of performers at two stages, and an organized schedule of games. The rain date is set for May 4.

Cinco De Mayo to be celebrated in style

Adelante staff writer

Even if most people don’t know what they’re celebrating, Cinco de Mayo brings merriment wherever it’s observed.
The historical significance of the date has been misunderstood north of the border, with many believing it’s Independence Day. In fact, it’s the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, when the Mexicans beat the French.
There’s no shortage of places in Central Missouri where you can celebrate. See adelantesi.com for the complete list, or call restaurants for details.
